Started because the bar was on the floor
Anyone who has hired an exterior contractor in the Greater Pittsburgh area knows the pattern. The crew that never shows on the day they promised. The quote scribbled on the back of a business card with one number on it. The salesperson who will not leave your kitchen table until you sign tonight, because tonight the price is special.
Tyler Hoffman started Top Dog Exteriors because homeowners deserve better than that, and because the standard for what "professional" means in this trade had drifted a very long way from what it means in the military.
What that turned into is a company organised around three unusual decisions. First, we run every trade under one roof — many of our crews specialise in a single type of work and have done it for years, while some carry more than one speciality — so when the roof meets the siding and the siding meets the gutters, there is exactly one company to hold responsible. Second, our decks are built by Amish crews whose framing standard is simply higher than what a rotating labor pool produces; it costs us more per day and it shows in the finished work. Third, we bought our own iron — a new Bobcat T595 and E35 excavator — so base prep, drainage and footings never depend on a rental yard's schedule, and so we can rent those machines to you with or without an operator.
What "Owens Corning Preferred Contractor" actually buys you
It is not a sticker. Owens Corning vets contractors on credentials, insurance and workmanship history before granting the designation, and only Preferred and Platinum contractors can register the Preferred Protection Roofing System Limited Warranty — the only tier that includes contractor workmanship coverage. If your roof was installed wrong, Owens Corning stands behind fixing it. A non-credentialed roofer cannot offer you that at any price.
Licensed, insured, and happy to prove it
We are registered with the Pennsylvania Attorney General as contractor PA193451, hold an A rating with the Better Business Bureau, and we carry general liability and workers' compensation on every job. Ask us for certificates — and ask every other contractor you are considering for theirs. If they hesitate, you have learned something important for free.
