Warranty Questions
What is the difference between a material warranty and a workmanship warranty?
A material warranty comes from the manufacturer and covers defects in the product itself — a shingle that delaminates, a board that splits, a window seal that fails. A workmanship warranty comes from the contractor and covers the installation. This distinction matters enormously, because material defects are rare and installation defects are common. A lifetime material warranty on a roof installed wrong is close to worthless, which is exactly why we put our workmanship in writing for 5 years.
Is your 5-year workmanship warranty transferable?
Yes. It transfers to the next owner if you sell the house, which is a genuine line item on a listing sheet. Bring us the closing date and we will reissue the certificate in the buyer’s name.
What does "non-prorated" mean and why should I care?
A non-prorated warranty pays the same in year 25 as it does in year 2. A prorated warranty shrinks its payout every year you own the product — so a "lifetime" prorated vinyl siding warranty may cover 15% of replacement cost by the time you actually need it. James Hardie’s 30-year substrate warranty and LP SmartSide’s 50-year substrate warranty are non-prorated, which is why we call that out specifically.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Call us first at (412) 438-8364 or email info@topdogexteriors.com. If it is a workmanship issue we handle it directly. If it is a material defect we file the manufacturer claim on your behalf — we registered the warranty in your name when we finished, so the paperwork is already on file. You should not have to argue with a manufacturer’s claims department by yourself.
What voids a warranty?
Most commonly: improper installation (which is what certification and workmanship coverage protect you from), inadequate attic ventilation on roofing, pressure-washing composite decking at the wrong PSI, painting products that were never meant to be painted, and structural movement or storm damage — which is an insurance matter, not a warranty matter. We walk through the specific exclusions for your product at handover rather than leaving you to find them later.
Do you register the manufacturer warranty for me?
Yes, on every project, in your name, before we leave. Manufacturer warranties frequently require registration within a fixed window after installation, and an unregistered warranty is a warranty you do not actually have. This is one of the most common ways homeowners lose coverage they paid for.
