Top Dog Exteriors builds custom TimberTech and Trex composite decks in the Greater Pittsburgh area. Every deck is framed and finished by our Amish crews, with manufacturer product warranties ranging from 25 years to a lifetime limited warranty.
The Difference That Actually Matters
Our decks are built by Amish crews. That is not marketing — it is why our framing is square, our picture-frame borders close tight, and our fastener lines are straight enough to sight down. Every deck is drawn up properly before a single board is cut: you get full professional drawings, always.
Framing, ledger attachment and flashing are the parts of a deck nobody sees and everybody regrets. We flash every ledger, bolt to structure, and build to PA residential code so your deck passes inspection the first time.
Everybody looks at the decking boards. I look at the ledger — the board bolting your deck to your house. That’s where the failures start, and if it isn’t flashed and bolted to structure, it doesn’t matter what you spent on the surface.

How Your Deck Project Runs
- 01
Design consult
We walk the yard, take grade and door-height measurements, and talk through how you actually use the space — grill, table, hot tub, dogs, stairs. Every deck we quote comes with full professional drawings, so you are approving a plan rather than a description.
- 02
Board and railing selection
Full-size TimberTech and Trex samples in your hand, in your light, against your siding. Color reads completely differently on a screen.
- 03
Permit & layout
We pull the municipal permit and stake the footing layout. Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon and Peters Township all inspect differently — we know each.
- 04
Amish crew build
Footings, framing, ledger flashing, decking, borders, railing, lighting. Hidden fasteners throughout so nothing shows on the walking surface.
- 05
Final inspection & warranty
Municipal final inspection, site cleanup, and your manufacturer warranty registered in your name.

Discounted Lighting Package with a Deck Replacement
Combine a low-voltage lighting package with your deck replacement and it comes at a discount — recessed riser lights and post-cap lights, wired and transformer-set. It is the upgrade every homeowner adds after the fact and wishes they had done during the build, and doing it while the framing is open is the cheapest it will ever be.
Design my deckOffer details & terms
Discount applies when the lighting package is purchased with a full deck replacement and installed on the same job. Discount is off the standard lighting package price; final pricing depends on layout and the number of risers and post caps. Not valid on repairs or as a standalone lighting installation.

Full Professional Drawings with Every Deck Quote
Every deck we quote is drawn up properly first — framing plan, dimensions, railing and stair layout — so you are approving a plan rather than a paragraph. We bring full-size TimberTech and Trex boards to hold against your siding in your own daylight, because composite colour reads nothing like it does on a screen.

I recently hired Top Dog Exteriors to replace my deck and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. They were easy to work with and the quality of their work speaks for itself—the new deck looks fantastic. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for deck work.
-
From getting quotes and prompt responses from Tyler (owner), to experiencing high quality and professional interactions with their field crew; our overall experience of working with the Top Dog Exteriors team far exceeded our expectations. Our deck looks "amazing"! Additionally, the field crew was very careful and minimized the disturbance of our yard.

From planning to completion, Top Dog Exteriors was excellent. Project was to replace the wood from the old porch with Treks and to replace the old steps also with Treks. Tyler and his crew did an excellent job and I would highly recommend them for your next project. Their pricing was very fair and their workmanship was top-notch. I would definitely use them again in the future.
Decks & Outdoor Living Questions, Answered Straight
How much does a composite deck cost in Pittsburgh?
Composite decks in the Greater Pittsburgh area generally run $45–$85 per square foot installed, depending on the board line, height off grade, stair count and railing system. A typical 16×20 Trex Enhance deck lands in the low-to-mid $20,000s; the same footprint in TimberTech Advanced PVC with lighting runs meaningfully higher. We price every option side by side.
Why do you use Amish crews?
Because the framing is the deck. Amish builders come up through a trade apprenticeship measured in years, not weeks, and the standard they hold for square framing, tight miters and consistent fastener lines is simply higher than what a rotating labor pool produces. It costs us more. It shows in the finished deck.
TimberTech or Trex — which should I pick?
If maximum warranty and heat performance matter most, TimberTech Advanced PVC wins: lifetime limited product coverage and 50-year fade and stain. If you want a matched board-and-railing system with the deepest tropical grain, Trex Transcend at 50 years is hard to beat. If the budget is the driver, Trex Enhance and TimberTech Edge deliver a genuine 25-year capped board. We stock samples of all of them.
Do composite decks get hot?
All decking gets hot in full sun; lighter colors run cooler than dark ones regardless of brand. TimberTech Advanced PVC runs measurably cooler than capped wood-composite because there is no wood flour in the board to hold heat. If your deck faces south with no shade, we will steer you toward a lighter PVC board.
Do I need a permit for a deck?
In virtually every municipality we serve — yes. We pull it. Deck permits in Allegheny and Washington County typically require a site plan, footing detail and framing plan, and the inspector will want to see footings before they are covered. Building without one becomes a very expensive problem when you sell the house.
Can you rebuild just the surface of my existing deck?
Sometimes. If the framing is pressure-treated, properly flashed and structurally sound, re-decking over existing joists is a legitimate way to save money. But composite boards require tighter joist spacing than old decks were often built to, so we inspect the frame first and tell you honestly whether it will carry the new material.
